Do I need a prescription from my doctor to be seen for Physical Therapy?

Highmark does not require a prescription for the first 30 days of physical therapy treatment. Direct Access to physical therapy providers was passed in Pennsylvania and allows patients to come directly to physical therapy without going to the doctor first. If you have another insurance, please contact us regarding the need for a prescription before initiating therapy services.

What is "Direct Access" to Physical Therapy?

In 2002, Pennsylvania became the 44th state to pass legislation regarding direct access to physical therapy. The law broke the traditional chain of per-authorization and treatment, allowing the patient to receive the first 30 days of physical therapy services without a physician's referral. this change has resulted in significant time and money savings for patients and most importantly, expedited their relief and recovery.

Most major health insurance providers allow coverage for "Direct Access".
